A treble for Sir Roger
1964 - Roger Hunt scored a hat-trick as we thumped Burnley 5-1 in a top-flight meeting at Turf Moor. Geoff Strong and Chris Lawler both struck their first reds goals while half-back Willie Stevenson reached a century of reds outings.

Half a millennium for Stevie
2009 - Steven Gerrard played his 500th reds game as we held Blackburn Rovers to a goalless Premiership draw at Ewood Park. The closest we came was when David N’Gog rattled the crossbar.
1925 – Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers struck in the ninetieth minute as we held Blackburn Rovers to a 1-1 draw in a top-flight meeting at Ewood Park. Ted Harper bagged one of his five goals against the reds.

Arnell off the mark fast
1953 - Forward Alan Arnell scored on his reds debut as we beat Blackpool 5-2 at Anfield. Right-winger Jimmy Payne netted while appearing for the 200th time with Sammy Smyth also on the scoresheet and Alan A’Court bagging a brace. Half-back Barry Wilkinson was also making his reds bow. Ernest Taylor struck the last two of his five goals past us in this game.

Carra’s error
1998 - Jamie Carragher scored an own goal as we lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur. He also put through his own net in the return fixture at Anfield later that season. Patrik Berger grabbed our goal at White Hart Lane, with Ruel Fox also netting for the home side.

We never lose in Rome
2001 - Our second trip in successive seasons to the Stadio Olimpico resulted in a goalless draw to keep us in with a shout of qualifying for the Quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Razor’s last
1981 – Ray Kennedy headed in his 72nd and last reds goal in our 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest, with Mark Lawrenson also nodding in.

Most recently
2018 – We won 3-1 at Burnley, despite falling behind to a Jack Cork goal after the break. James Milner equalised before substitute Roberto Firmino prodded in with his first touch. Xherdan Shaqiri completed the scoring in injury time.

Beating Wednesday
We have twice beaten Sheffield Wednesday on this day over the years.
1999 - We triumphed 4-1 at Anfield, as Steven Gerrard bagged his first reds goal. Sami Hyypiä, Danny Murphy and David Thompson all also struck after future Blue Niclas Alexandersson had opened the scoring for the Owls.
1908 - We beat The Wednesday 3-2, as they were then still known, in another top-flight encounter. Joe Hewitt, Sam Bowyer and Ronald Orr grabbed our goals at Owlerton. Andrew Wilson struck the last of his eight goals against the reds, with Billy Lloyd also on target.

Jay off
2011 - Jay Spearing was harshly sent off as we lost 1-0 at Fulham, in what was Martin Jol’s first defeat of the reds as Manager, at the eighth attempt in all competitions. Future reds target Clint Dempsey struck the only goal of the game late on, with Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing both hitting a post.

Goals galore
1931 - Gordon Hodgson, Dave Wright, Gordon Gunson and Danny McRorie were all on target as we beat Birmingham City by the odd goal in seven in a First Division fixture at Anfield. George Briggs netted the last of his ten goals against the reds, with Tom Grosvenor and Sam Smith also on the scoresheet.
1896 – We thumped Fleetwood Rangers 9-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup game at Anfield. George Allan struck four times with Frank Becton also nabbing a hat-trick. Our other goals came from Joe McQue and an own goal.

Miki’s bow in Istanbul
2006 - Young Spanish centre-half Miki Roqué made his only reds appearance as a substitute for Xabi Alonso for the final six minutes of our 3-2 defeat at Galatasaray, so becoming the player with the shortest first-class career in our history. This was the final game of our Champions League group, in which we had already secured top spot. Robbie Fowler bagged both our goals, his only reds strikes in the Champions League proper.

Young debutants
1990 - Steve McManaman became the first player to play for the England Under-21’s without any first-team experience, as he featured in their goalless friendly draw with Wales at Prenton Park. He went on to make his senior reds debut ten days later.
1962 - Tommy Lawrence won his only cap for Scotland Under-23’s as they beat England 2-0 in a friendly at Pittodrie.

Colvin born
1876 – Scottish forward Bobby Colvin was born in Kirkconnel. He only ever made three senior appearances after signing from Oldham County in November 1897, without finding the net, and then joined Glossop North End the following year.

In comes John
1902 - Forward John Carlin signed from Barnsley, netting eight times in 35 games before moving on to Preston North End in May 1907.

Other reds games
1979 – We won a League Cup Fifth Round tie 3-1 at Norwich City. David Johnson bagged a brace, with Kenny Dalglish also on target before Kevin Reeves bagged the first of his four goals against the reds.
1970 – John Toshack netted as top-of-the-table Leeds United held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

1959 – We beat Ipswich Town 3-1 in a Second Division fixture in L4. Roger Hunt struck twice, with Dave Hickson also on the scoresheet.
1936 – We lost 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with James Clayton nabbing a brace.
1914 – Jimmy Nicholl struck as we drew 1-1 with Manchester City at their old Hyde Road ground, with Fred Howard scoring one of his nine past us.

At the World Cup
2022 – Alisson Becker played as Brazil beat South Korea 4-1 to reach the World Cup Quarter-finals in Qatar. On the same day, Takumi Minamino had a penalty saved as Japan lost a shoot-out to Croatia after their Round of 16 tie ended 1-1, with fellow ex-red Dejan Lovren and future red Wataru Endō also in action.

Youngsters in Arabia
2003 - Four young reds appeared for their countries in the Under-20 World Championship Finals in the United Arab Emirates. Zak Whitbread played in the USA’s 2-0 defeat of South Korea, while John Welsh turned out as England were held to a goalless draw by Colombia, with future red Andy Lonergan wining his ninth and last cap at this level. Meanwhile, Darren Potter was sent off as the Republic of Ireland, also featuring Michael Foley-Sheridan, beat Mexico 2-0.

Elisha for the Irish
1931 - Reds keeper Elisha Scott won his sixteenth cap for Northern Ireland, following five for the combined Ireland, as they thumped Wales 4-0 in the British International Championships in Belfast.

Digger in charge
2008 – John Barnes led Jamaica to a 4-0 thumping of Grenada in the Digicel Caribbean Championships in Montego Bay.

Getting the boot
2020 – Future reds boss Arne Slot was sacked as Head Coach of AZ Alkmaar, having already agreed to join Feyenoord. He had joined as an Assistant in July 2017, taking over as Head Coach two years later. He led Alkmaar to 32 victories in 58 games in charge.
