One reds legend for another
1980 - Ian Rush made his reds bow, replacing Kenny Dalglish who was missing his first League game after 147 consecutive appearances. We drew 1-1 at Ipswich Town with substitute Jimmy Case on target, and Alan Brazil netting for the home side.

Red awards
1998 - Michael Owen was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year, following his breathtaking arrival on the international scene at that summer’s World Cup in France.
2006 - Council members voted unanimously to award Steven Gerrard the Honorary Freeman of Knowsley Borough, the first time anyone had been so honoured since 1988, and only the fourth person ever to be granted it.

Red births and death
1972 – Damien Comolli was born in Béziers in France. He was appointed Director of Football Strategy in November 2010, and promoted to Director of Football four months later, but left by mutual consent in April 2012.
1958 - Forward John Lipsham died. He signed from Chester in May 1906, failing to score in just three reds outings, returning to Chester in 1907.
1950 – Winger Peter Spiring was born in Glastonbury. He signed from Bristol City for £60,000 in March 1973, but only made it as far as the first-team bench on two occasions, without making it onto the field. He left for Luton Town in November 1974, later establishing himself at Hereford United.

Recent stalemates
2015 – We were held to a 2-2 draw by West Bromwich Albion at Anfield with Divock Origi bagging a late leveller. Jordan Henderson had put us in front before Craig Dawson and Jonas Olsson netted for the Baggies. New boss Jürgen Klopp led the players to the Kop after the match to acknowledge the support.
2017 – We were held to a goalless draw by the Baggies in L4.
2020 – We drew 1-1 with Fulham behind closed doors at Craven Cottage, with Mohamed Salah equalising from the spot.

Beating Boro
We have twice beaten Middlesbrough at Anfield in the top flight on this day in history.
1913 - Tom Miller and Tommy Gracie netted as we won 2-1, with George Elliott scoring one of his eight goals against the reds.
1919 - Harry Chambers grabbed the only goal of the game in what was George Patterson’s last match as reds boss.

Up against Spurs
We have twice visited White Hart Lane on this day in history.
1975 - Kevin Keegan, Jimmy Case, Phil Neal and Steve Heighway all struck as we won 4-0, with Heighway playing his 200th League game for the club.
1924 - Dick Forshaw was on the scoresheet as we drew 1-1, the seventh of eight consecutive games in which he was on target. This was Spurs’ hundredth top-flight stalemate.

Beaten twice by the Mancs
Manchester United have twice left Anfield with all the points on this day in history.
1952 - Billy Liddell was on target as we were ahead at half time before going on to lose 2-1. Stan Pearson struck one of his eleven goals against the reds, with John Aston also on target.
1969 - Emlyn Hughes grabbed our consolation as we were thumped 4-1, with Ron Yeats putting through his own net. Roger Hunt made his 492nd and final reds appearance in this game. Bobby Charlton bagged one of his four goals past us, with Willie Morgan and Ian Ure also scoring.

Another European win
1972 - Phil Boersma netted in the opening minute with Steve Heighway and John Toshack also striking as we beat Dynamo Berlin 3-1 at Anfield in the Third Round of the UEFA Cup, after a goalless first leg in East Germany. Boersma’s strike was our quickest in Europe until Joe Cole’s goal against Steaua Bucureşti at Anfield in September 2010. Forward Jack Whitham made his eighteenth and final reds appearance in this game.

King Kenny back at Anfield
1992 - Kenny Dalglish returned to Anfield as visiting Manager for the first time, with substitute Mark Walters netting a brace either side of a stunning Alan Shearer volley, one of his eight goals past us, as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1, our first goals from off the bench in the newly-renamed Premier League.

Carra errs again
2008 - Jamie Carragher struck his seventh own goal for the reds, a club record, as Hull City held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield. The Tigers took a surprise lead when defender Paul McShane headed in before we went two behind. Steven Gerrard bagged a brace before the break, but we were unable to find a winner. His second strike was our 600th at home in the Premier League.

Starting and ending in the far east
1981 - Craig Johnston made his first reds start as a Zico-inspired Flamengo beat us 3-0 in the World Club Championship in Tokyo’s National Stadium. Ray Kennedy made his 393rd and final reds appearance in this game. Nunes bagged a brace, with Adilio also on target.

Goalscoring firsts
2000 - Two reds substitutes scored in the same domestic game for the first time, with Michael Owen and Nick Barmby both netting as we beat Fulham 3-0 in a League Cup Fifth Round tie after extra time, on our way to winning the trophy for the eighth time. Vladimír Šmicer bagged his first goal at Anfield to complete the scoring.

Signing on
1991 - Michael Thomas signed from Arsenal for £1.5m. He spent nearly seven years at Anfield, playing 163 reds games, and scoring twelve times, including the 1992 FA Cup Final opener. He left to join SL Benfica on a free transfer in August 1998, after a loan spell with Middlesbrough.
1929 - Outside-right Tony McNamara signed from Everton for £4,000 after spending seven seasons across Stanley Park. However, he only played ten first-team games before joining Crewe Alexandra in July 1958.

Reaching the World Cup Final
2022 – Future red Alexis Mac Allister helped Argentina defeat Croatia 3-0 in their World Cup Semi-final in Qatar, with ex-red Dejan Lovren on the losing side.

Red trebles
1941 - James McIntosh scored a hat-trick, his first reds goals, as we beat Tranmere Rovers 7-2 in a Wartime League game. Dicky Dorsett and Len Carney both added braces.

Disappointment against the Gunners
2009 – Arsenal won 2-1 at Anfield as we scored in a new club record nineteenth consecutive home Premier League game. Dirk Kuyt gave us a deserved first-half lead but Glen Johnson handed the initiative to the visitors with an unlucky own goal after the break. Andriy Arshavin bagged the winner with the most recent of his five strikes past us, as Fábio Aurélio played his hundredth reds game.
1930 - Right-half Tom Morrison grabbed his first reds goal, in the opening minute of our 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Anfield, with the Gunners going on to claim the League title for the first time that season. David Jack struck one of his nine goals against the reds.

Jim’s century
1947 – Full-back Jim Harley played his hundredth League game for the reds as we won 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Albert Stubbins and Jack Balmer on target.

Czech out Vlad’s double
1997 - Future red Vladimír Šmicer bagged both the Czech Republic’s goals as they drew with South Africa in a Confederations Cup game in Saudi Arabia.

Failing at Anfield
1995 - Phil Babb, Jason McAteer and ex-red John Aldridge all played as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in a Euro ’96 play-off at Anfield. Patrick Kluivert netted both goals in Jack Charlton’s last game as Ireland boss.

Young deity on target in L4
1994 - Robbie Fowler came off the bench to score for England B as they beat the Republic of Ireland 2-0 in a friendly at Anfield. Neil Ruddock skippered a side that also included David James, Jamie Redknapp, John Scales and future red Nick Barmby, while Phil Babb, ex-red Ronnie Whelan and future red Jason McAteer all played for the Irish. Also in international action that day was future reds midfielder Jean-Michel Ferri.

On the move
1996 - Reserves defender and Phil’s son, Ashley Neal joined Huddersfield Town on a free transfer. He did not make a first-team appearance for the Terriers, before joining Peterborough United on non-contract terms three months later.
2002 – Keeper Brad Jones joined Stockport County on loan from Middlesbrough. He only played once for the Hatters in his one month at Edgeley Park.
2012 – He signed a new contract at Anfield, having signed from Boro for £2.3m in August 2010. He made 23 senior appearances for the reds before being released in June 2015.

2018 – Ex-reds midfielder Kevin MacDonald was suspended from Aston Villa’s coaching staff following allegations of bullying. He eventually left the club the following August, with the club apologising to payers formerly under his charge.

More new contracts
2019 – Manager Jürgen Klopp signed a new contract tying him to the reds until 2024. On the same day, vice-captain James Milner penned an extension to keep him at Anfield until 2022, with both later further extending these deals.

Beating Austria
1933 – Sam English bagged a treble as we defeated the Austrian national side 4-2 at Anfield, with Berry Nieuwenhuys also netting. They were a very fine side at the time, finishing fourth in the World Cup Finals in Italy the following summer.

Other reds games
2003 – Emile Heskey netted our consolation as Southampton won 2-1 at Anfield.
1998 – We lost 1-0 to Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. Robbie Earle scored the last of his five goals against the reds, with Michael Owen then having a penalty saved.
1997 – We beat Crystal Palace 3-0 at Selhurst Park with Steve McManaman, Michael Owen and Øyvind Leonhardsen all on the scoresheet.

1958 – Jimmy Melia and Alan A’Court struck as we won a Second Division fixture 2-1 at Sc***horpe United, with the reds having to play some of the first half with ten men as Jimmy Harrower needed three stitches in an eye wound.
1902 – We won 2-1 at Aston Villa with Joe Bache netting the first of his nine goals past us before Arthur Goddard equalised. Sam Raybould bagged the late winner.

Also in international action
1950 – Billy Liddell played for Scotland as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Austria at Hampden Park.
1983 – Graeme Souness captained his country with ex-red Frank McGarvey also playing in Scotland’s 2-0 British International Championships win in Northern Ireland.
1989 – Steve McMahon and future red Michael Thomas played as England beat Yugoslavia 2-1 in a friendly at Wembley.

Missing out
2004 - Milan Baroš was voted joint twelfth in the Ballon d’Or awards, with future red Fernando Morientes coming in equal seventeenth as AC Milan’s Andriy Shevchenko claimed the trophy.
