Central moves
2014 – Daniel Agger joined Brøndby IF in his native Denmark for a reported £3m, after fourteen goals in 232 games since signing from the same club for £5.8m in January 2006. He had helped us to claim the FA Community Shield and League Cup.
2011 – Uruguayan Sebastián Coates signed from Nacional for £7m after impressing at the recent Copa América tournament. He netted twice in 24 senior outings for the reds, failing to break through to becoming a first team regular. He was sold to Sunderland for £4m in July 2015 after spending the previous season on loan there.
1960 – Right-half Gordon Milne signed from his hometown club Preston North End for a club record £16,000. He played 282 times for us, netting eighteen times and winning the League title twice, as well as the Second Division championship before joining Blackpool in May 1967. He also won fourteen England caps, and later successfully managed Coventry City and Leicester City.
Masch off
2010 - Javier Mascherano was sold to Barcelona for €22m, after two goals in 139 reds games. He signed for the reds on loan from West Ham United in January 2007, joining permanently thirteen months later.
A hat-trick for Michael
1998 - Michael Owen bagged a hat-trick as we beat Newcastle United 4-1 at St. James’ Park, to spoil Ruud Gullit’s first game in charge. Stéphane Guivarc’h replied for the home side with Patrik Berger rounding out the scoring, which all took place in the first half.
The Saint off the mark
1961 – Ian St. John struck his first two reds goals as we trounced Sunderland 4-1, with Roger Hunt also on target twice and Brian Clough netting the last of his ten goals past us.
1958 – We were beaten 2-1, when Billy Liddell grabbed our consolation at Roker Park.
1922 - We also lost 1-0 on another visit to the North East.
Carra’s half century
2012 - Jamie Carragher played his fiftieth game in Europe’s second tier competition as Heart Of Midlothian held us to a 1-1 draw in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League play-off at Anfield. David Templeton’s strike that evaded Pepe Reina with just six minutes remaining looked to have secured extra time, but Luis Suárez scored to send us through.
1980 – Left-back Alan Kennedy reached a century of reds appearances, also scoring in our 4-1 defeat of Norwich City at Anfield with Alan Hansen, Terry McDermott and David Johnson also on target.
Loaned out
2012 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll joined West Ham United on loan after bagging eleven goals in 58 reds games since his club record £35m capture on transfer deadline day in January 2011. He netted seven times in 24 games for the Irons, before signing on permanently for £15.5m in June 2013, their record fee paid to date. On the same day, young forward Samed Yeşil moved to Anfield from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a reported £1m. He made two senior reds appearances before being released in June 2016. Meanwhile, ex-red Ryan Babel was released by TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, later re-joining Ajax.
2015 – Forward Lazar Marković joined Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü on loan, netting twice in twenty outings.
Also off and running
2003 - Harry Kewell netted his first reds goal as we won 3-0 at Everton, with Michael Owen bagging a brace. This was our fourth straight League win at Goodison, a record for any club.
1948 – Les Shannon struck his only reds goal as we won 2-1 at Sheffield United, with Billy Liddell also on target.
Out of Anfield
2002 - Jari Litmanen rejoined his old club Ajax on a free transfer. He had only managed to make nineteen starts in as many months at Anfield, notching nine goals in 43 appearances in all, and failed to really establish himself back in the Netherlands.
2006 - Neil Mellor joined Preston North End for a reported £0.5m. He netted 43 times in 151 outings before having to retire due to injury in May 2012.
1999 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme signed for Saint-Étienne on a free transfer. He had made 54 reds appearances but was not the defensive missing link we were searching for. He spent two seasons in France before joining Sander Westerveld at Real Sociedad, retiring from the game in June 2008 after a spell back with his first club, Rosenborg BK.
1990 - Reserves defender Alex Watson joined Derby County on loan, going on to make five appearances for the Rams. His brother Dave, another ex-reds reserve, went on to far greater success with Everton.
1911 – Forward Herbert Leavey left the reds to join Barnsley after just five senior games since arriving from Plymouth Argyle in June 1910.
Also off the mark
1919 – George Patterson took charge of the reds for the first time as inside-forward Harry Lewis, Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and outside-left Albert Pearson all scored on their reds debuts, as we won 3-1 at Bradford City as another season began, with Jimmy Marshall nabbing one of his five goals against the reds. Lewis also missed a penalty, while full-back William Jenkinson also made his reds bow with forward Billy Lacey playing his hundredth League game for the club.
1933 - Forward Sam English scored his first reds goal in our 1-1 draw with Stoke City at Anfield, the first time we had faced them since their name change from the simpler Stoke. Tommy Sale struck the first of his five goals past us that day.
We have beaten Stoke City twice more on this day over the years.
1947 - Billy Liddell struck a brace as we won 2-0 at the Victoria Ground.
1952 - We won 3-2 in L4 with Jack Smith, Kevin Baron and Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. Frank Bowyer struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Les Johnston also netting.
Happy birthdays
1986 - Winger Sebastián Leto was born in Alejandro Korn in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He signed from Club Atlético Lanús for £1.85m in January 2007, although the transfer was not formally completed until seven months later. He made just four senior appearances and moved permanently to Panathinaikos in July 2009 after spending the previous season on loan at Olympiacos.
2002 – Portuguese forward Fábio Carvalho was born in Torres Vedras. He signed from Fulham for an initial £5m in July 2022, debuting as we won the FA Community Shield later that month and scoring a total of three times in 21 games in his first season with the reds, spending the second out on loan at first RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V., then Hull City.
Out-foxed
We twice visited Filbert Street to play Leicester City on this day in the 1970’s, without winning.
1972 - We lost 3-2 with John Toshack bagging an early brace to put us two goals ahead, before Keith Weller struck a hat-trick, the first of his six goals against the reds.
1975 - We were held 1-1, with Kevin Keegan nabbing our goal. Two minutes earlier he had converted a penalty, but had to retake it, and failed with his second attempt. Keith Weller netted against the reds again, the last of his six strikes against us.
Losing out to the Villains
We twice faced Aston Villa on this day in the 1920’s, without winning.
1924 - Donald McKinlay and Danny Shone netted as we lost 4-2 at Anfield in our opening match of the season. Billy Walker struck two of his five goals against the reds, with Billy Kirton and Arthur Dorrell also on target.
1926 - Dick Forshaw was on target as we drew 1-1 at Villa Park, with Len Capewell scoring one of his six strikes past us.
Heading towards Wembley
1977 - Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Case were on the scoresheet as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield in a League Cup Second Round fixture. We went on to reach the Final of the competition for the first time that season.
East end Hutch
1994 - Don Hutchison left Anfield for West Ham United for £1.5m after ten goals in sixty reds games.
2001 - He moved back to Upton Park, joining from Sunderland for £5m, having also played for Sheffield United and Everton in the meantime.
Starting off well
1930 - Jim Smith netted twice as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Anfield in our opening fixture of the season, with outside-left Fred Hopkin playing his 300th League game for the reds. Jack Bruton scored one of his four goals past us.
Beaten to a trophy
1989 - The reds lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the eleventh Trofeo Internacional “Santiago Bernabéu”, thanks to goals from Hugo Sánchez and Emilio Butragueño.

1995 – Neil Ruddock netted the only goal of Queens Park Rangers’ visit to Anfield.
1986 – We beat Arsenal 2-1 in L4. Jan Mølby converted a penalty before Tony Adams equalised. Ian Rush grabbed the winner.
1969 – Chris Lawler headed in as we drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday.
1966 – We beat Manchester City 3-2 at home with Roger Hunt and Geoff Strong both scoring early on. Matt Gray pulled a goal back after the break with Hunt netting again before Jimmy Murray bagging the last of his four goals against the reds.
1950 – We lost 1-0 at Manchester United.
A Gray day
1910 - 1930’s defender Alf Gray was born in Westhoughton, Bolton. He failed to break into our first team.
On the move
2005 – Brazilian keeper Alexander Doni joined Roma from Juventude in his native land for US$18,000.
2003 - Steve McManaman signed for Manchester City from Real Madrid on a free transfer. He appeared just 44 times for them without scoring before being released.
2002 - Øyvind Leonhardsen joined Aston Villa from Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. He left Villa Park two years later, after three goals in 23 games.
1997 - Reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed from Sydney Olympic. He never made our first team, and is currently back in his homeland, running a soccer school.
2006 – Future reds scout Jonathan Woodgate joined Middlesbrough on loan from Real Madrid, making the move permanent for £7m the following summer. He played 52 times without scoring, moving on to Tottenham Hotspur for a reported £8m in January 2008.
2018 – Keeper Caoimhin Kelleher and winger Sheyi Ojo both signed new contracts, with Ojo then completing a loan move to Stade de Reims on the same day, where he scored once in eighteen games for their first team.
2021 – Left-back James Norris signed a new contract with the reds, having already made one senior appearance. On the same day, centre-half Ozan Kabak joined Norwich City on loan from Schalke 04, playing twelve times as they were relegated from the Premier League.
2022 - Dutch centre-half Sepp van den Berg penned a new deal, also joining Schalke 04 on loan on the same day, scoring once in nine games while in Germany.
First caps
1996 - Brad Friedel won his first cap as a Columbus Crew player, and fortieth in total, as the USA beat El Salvador 3-1 in a friendly in Los Angeles.
2006 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses played for England Under-17’s for the first time, in their 2-2 friendly draw with Turkey. On the same day, future red Alex Manninger played for Austria Under-21’s in their 4-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Scotland in Amstetten.
Also in international action
2015 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they lost a friendly 7-3 to Portugal in Burton, with Adam Lewis playing.
2016 - Ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-18’s as they lost 2-0 to Switzerland in a friendly in Meyrin.
