More Euro glory
2019 – We claimed the UEFA Super Cup for the fourth time, beating Chelsea 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out in Istanbul after our meeting ended 1-1 after ninety minutes, and 2-2 after extra time. Olivier Giroud scored the seventh of his eight goals past us to date in the first half, with a Sadio Mané brace either side of the full-time whistle putting us ahead. Jorginho converted a debatable penalty, before the match was decided from twelve yards. Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Divock Origi, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah all scored before Adrián saved from Tammy Abraham. Joël Matip reached a century of reds games that night.

Debutant goalscorers
1971 - Kevin Keegan netted on his first-class reds debut as we ran out 3-1 winners over Nottingham Forest at Anfield, with our other goals coming from Emlyn Hughes and a Tommy Smith penalty, while Ian Storey-Moore scored one of his five goals against the reds. This was also the first game for stadium announcer George Sephton.
1993 - Former Forest forward Nigel Clough bagged both goals on his reds bow as we saw off Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Anfield. Neil Ruddock also made his debut in this game, while Carlton Palmer was sent off early on for a foul on Jan Mølby.

Lawro sets a new record
1981 – Defender Mark Lawrenson signed from Brighton & Hove Albion for a club record £900,000, going on to make 356 appearances, netting eighteen times while helping us to win four League titles, one European Cup, one FA Cup, three League Cups, the FA Charity Shield and Screen Sport Super Cup in his time at Anfield, before taking over as Oxford United boss in March 1988.

Adios St Michael
2004 - Michael Owen joined Real Madrid for £8m after 158 goals in 297 reds games, and having helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield, as well as being voted European Footballer of the Year in his time at Anfield. He remained in Spain for just one season, moving back to England to join Newcastle United for £17m in August 2006.

Charity begins away from home
1976 - We claimed our third outright FA Charity Shield by defeating Southampton 1-0 at Wembley, courtesy of a John Toshack strike. We wore the unusual combination of white shirts and shorts with red socks.
1965 - We drew 2-2 with Manchester United at Old Trafford, with the trophy being shared between the two clubs. Willie Stevenson and Ron Yeats were on target for the reds that day, with George Best scoring the first of his seven goals past us. David Herd also netted for United.

Key signings
1893 - Matt McQueen was registered with the Football League. He arrived from Leith Athletic in October 1892 and bagged seven goals in 103 games for the reds, playing in every position on the park including 41 games in goal, helping us to claim the Second Division title twice, once while as a keeper. He later served as a Director and then as Manager for five years in the 1920’s, leading us to our fourth League title in 1923.
1963 – Outside-left Peter Thompson signed from Preston North End for £37,000. He netted 54 times in 416 reds games, helping us to win two League titles and our first FA Cup before joining Bolton Wanderers for £18,000 in January 1974.

Arriving from the north east
1995 - A less celebrated signing happened when keeper Stephen Pears arrived on a free transfer from Middlesbrough. He never made a first-team appearance but did sit on the bench five times as understudy to David James.

Mo again
2021 – Mohamed Salah struck as we won 3-0 at Norwich City, so netting is his fifth consecutive opening League game of the season, a Premier League first. Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino had already scored.

Off the mark
2016 – Forward Sadio Mané struck on his reds bow as we won a pulsating match 4-3 at Arsenal to kick off our season, with centre-back Ragnar Klavan and midfielder Gini Wijnaldum also debuting. Simon Mignolet saved a penalty from Theo Walcott, a club record fifth in the Premier League, but he put the home side in front soon afterwards. Philippe Coutinho converted a free-kick in first-half stoppage time with Adam Lallana, Coutinho and then Mané putting us 4-1 in front. However, future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Calum Chambers reduced the deficit, although we hung on to win.
2004 - Djibril Cissé scored his first reds goal as we held Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane, with Jermain Defoe bagging the home side’s equaliser.

Red departures
2023 - Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for Beşiktaş JK, having been released by the reds earlier that summer. He struck four times in thirty outings during his first campaign in Turkey.
2014 – Defender Martin Kelly was sold to Crystal Palace for a reported £2m after one goal in 62 reds games.

1971 – Left-half John Browning died. He signed from Dunoon Athletic in March 1934, making just nineteen appearances before moving on to Southern League side Gillingham in August 1939.
1944 – Forward Joe Lumsden passed away. He signed from Burton Wanderers in June 1897, scoring twice in just eight senior outings before moving on to Glossop North End in May 1898.

A big day for the Dalglish family
1990 - Anfield hosted a testimonial match for King Kenny. The reds beat a Real Sociedad side that including the returning John Aldridge 3-1, with our goals coming from an Ian Rush brace and Steve McMahon.
1996 - Kenny’s son Paul Dalglish signed for the reds from Celtic Juniors. He could not break through into the first team in his fifteen months at Anfield, and so moved on to Newcastle United, where he at least managed to make thirteen first-team appearances.

Jan on trial
1984 - Jan Mølby joined the reds on trial from Ajax, eight days prior to signing for £225,000. He went on to net 61 times in his 292 reds games, including a remarkable forty of his 42 attempted spot-kicks. He won three League titles and two FA Cups while at Anfield, before moving into management.

Out on loan
2006 - Scott Carson joined Charlton Athletic on loan. He played 38 times for the Addicks as they were relegated, earning plenty of plaudits during his time at The Valley, including being named their player of the season.
2007 – Future reds record buy Andy Carroll joined Preston North End from Newcastle United for five months, during which time he netted just once in twelve appearances. On the same day, second string midfielder Jimmy Ryan signed on loan for Shrewsbury Town, later joining permanently. He played seven times for the Shrews but was released at the end of the campaign.

League defeats
1968 - We lost 2-0 at Southampton, thanks to the first of Terry Paine’s four strikes past us, and a Ron Davies goal.
1999 - We were beaten 1-0 by newly promoted Watford at Anfield with Tommy Mooney on target. That was their highlight of a season that saw them head straight back down to the First Division.

Hodgson off the mark
1982 - New forward signing David Hodgson scored in his first reds fixture as we beat Real Betis Balompié 2-0 in the pre-season Málaga Tournament in Marbella. Kenny Dalglish grabbed the other goal.

We also won two other tournament games in Spain in subsequent years to claim third place in each competition.
1983 - Michael Robinson struck a brace as we beat Dinamo Bucureşti 3-2 in the La Linea Tournament, with Kenny Dalglish nabbing the other.
1988 - Gary Gillespie and John Barnes netted to add to a brace from Steve McMahon as we beat Real Sociedad 4-0 in the T Herrera Tournament in San Sebastián.

For Jock
1978 - The reds played in a testimonial match against Celtic for their legendary boss Jock Stein. We ran out 3-2 winners, courtesy of a Kenny Dalglish brace and a goal from Alan Kennedy in his first reds game.

Other friendlies
1973 - Steve Heighway netted as we drew 1-1 at Hertha BSC Berlin.
1995 - Ian Rush bagged the only goal of our friendly at Northern Irish side Linfield.

International goalscorers
2013 – Luis Suárez struck as Uruguay beat Japan 4-2 in a friendly in Rifu. Meanwhile, future red Rickie Lambert scored the winner on his debut as Roy Hodgson’s England beat Scotland 3-2 at Wembley, while future red Mohamed Salah scored in Egypt’s 3-0 friendly defeat of Uganda behind closed doors. Dejan Lovren featured for Croatia for the first time since joining Southampton in their 3-2 friendly win in Lichtenstein, with Nikolay Mihaylov winning his first cap as a Hellas Verona player in Bulgaria’s 2-0 defeat by FYR Macedonia in Skopje. Also in international action that day were Joe Allen, Sebastián Coates, Steven Gerrard, Danny Ward, future reds Thiago Alcântara, Christian Benteke, Ádám Bogdán, Ragnar Klavan, Sadio Mané, James Milner, Victor Moses, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xherdan Shaqiri and Gini Wijnaldum, and ex-reds Alberto Aquilani, Álvaro Arbeloa, Craig Bellamy, Yossi Benayoun, Javier Mascherano, Carl Medjani, Nikolay Mihaylov, Maxi Rodríguez and Nuri Şahin. On the same day, Dejan Lovren won his first cap as a Southampton player in Croatia’s 3-2 friendly win in Liechtenstein.
2009 – Future red Emre Can bagged his first goal for Germany Under-16’s in their 4-0 thumping of Switzerland in a friendly in Liechtenstein.

Olympian reds
2004 - Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they beat the host nation 2-0 in an Olympics group game in Thessaloniki, Greece. Meanwhile, fellow future red Javier Mascherano appeared as Argentina beat Tunisia 2-0 in Patras.

More internationals
2001 - Future red Djibril Cissé came off the bench to make his debut for France Under-21’s as they lost 3-2 to Russia in a friendly in Caen. Stephen Wright and future reds Jermaine Pennant and Pepe Reina were also in Under-21’s action that day.
1996 - Sami Hyypiä won his tenth Finnish cap, while still with Willem II. The Finns were held to a goalless draw in a friendly in Latvia.

2011 – Future red Philippe Coutinho faced Dani Pacheco in the Under-20 World Championship Finals as Brazil and Spain drew 2-2 in their Quarter-final before Brazil triumphed 4-2 on penalties.
2012 - Samed Yeşil debuted for Germany Under-19’s, winning his only cap at that level as a Bayer 04 Leverkusen player, in their 1-0 friendly win in Scotland. Danny Wilson played for Scotland Under-21’s on the same day as they lost 1-0 to Belgium in a friendly in Dunfermline.
2014 – Future red Marko Grujić featured for Serbia Under-19’s in their 3-0 friendly defeat in Slovakia.

Papa Nando
2001 - Lucia was born in Madrid, the daughter of future red Fernando Morientes and his wife Victoria.

Trent’s award
2020 - Trent Alexander-Arnold was named as the inaugural Premier League Young Player of the Season for 2019-20 after four goals, thirteen assists and twelve clean sheets as we claimed the League title.
