Alan Wiley of Staffordshire will referee our Carling Cup tie at The Emirates Stadium against Arsenal on Wednesday evening.
This will be his fourth Carling Cup tie involving the reds and we have won the previous three including the Third Round win at Leeds United last month. The other two games were at Millwall in October 2004 and the 2nd leg of the semi-final against Sheffield United in January 2003.
He started refereeing back in 1981 through the West Midlands Regional League and became a Football League linesman ten years later. In 1994 he was promoted to run the line in The Premiership. He was then given the whistle in The Football League twelve months later.
This will his first time at The Emirates Stadium this season, although he was there three times in total last season, and will also be the first time he has refereed Arsenal this season. It will be his second time for us this season after he was in the middle of our 3-2 win at Bolton Wanderers at the end of August. The last time he refereed Arsenal in the Carling Cup was January 2007 when they needed extra time to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 in the 2nd leg of the Semi-final.
He is one of three current referees who have refereed both the FA Cup and League Cup Finals, achieving this three seasons ago by becoming the first referee to do both finals in the same season. He had already refereed Manchester United's 4-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in the Carling Cup before he got the call to replace Mike Dean at the FA Cup Final between West Ham United and ourselves. Wiley classes that game as the best one he has ever officiated in.
His assistants are Shaun Procter-Green and Andy Garratt with Andy D'Urso as the fourth official. Andy Garrett was his official on Friday night at Bramhall Lane.
