Liverpool v Manchester United (25/10/2009) - Meet the Referee
Friday, 23rd October 2009
Andre Marriner from the West Midlands will referee our vital Premiership clash with Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
This is the first time he will referee a match between the so-called ‘Top Four', and comes in his sixth season of refereeing in the top flight.

He started refereeing at the age of 21 by accident. He went along to watch a local team play and the referee never turned up. He was asked to referee the game as he was not affiliated to either club. He then took a refereeing course and only eight years later was promoted to the Football League as an assistant referee.

He spent the next three seasons on the line before getting the jump to the middle. In his first season as referee he was awarded the Conference Play-off final between Doncaster Rovers and Dagenham and Redbridge, and was then fourth official for the FA Youth Cup Final.

Now appointed to the International list, he has started to gain European experience by refereeing in this season's Europa League where he has already officiated in two games.

Andre has refereed Manchester United five times previously in the Premiership and each time they have taken maximum points. Our record stands at three wins, three losses and two draws with the Birmingham official in the middle.
His assistants are Adam Watts and Patrick Keane with Peter Walton as the fourth official. Both Watts and Walton were with Marriner when he refereed our 3-2 win at Upton Park last month.

Some memorable matches involving Andre Marriner and Liverpool:
8th February 2007 - Charlton beat us 2-0 at The Valley.
8th December 2007 - Our unbeaten Premiership record ends at Reading 3-1. Jack Hobbs is given his first start in the Premiership and Gerrard scores his 50th Premiership goal.
12th January 2008 - Torres scores an equaliser to gain a point at Middlesbrough.
15th March 2008 - Mascherano scores his first Liverpool goal, and Torres hits his 20th Premiership goal in a 2-1 win at home to Reading.
19th September 2009 - A Torres double helps us to a 3-2 win at West Ham in Pepe Reina's 150th League game for us.
