Liverpool v Birmingham City (09/11/2009) - Meet the Referee
Saturday, 7th November 2009
Peter Walton of Long Buckby makes another quick return to Anfield this season to referee our next Premiership game against Birmingham City on Monday night.

Walton refereed our home wins against Stoke City and Hull City, and considering Monday's appointment will only be his eighth Premiership game this season, to have us three times is somewhat concerning. It will also be his second time in charge of a Birmingham match having refereed their 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur at the end of August.

He refereed a match between Birmingham City and ourselves back in April last year at St. Andrews, when goals from Crouch and Benayoun gave us a 2-2 draw, the goal by Peter Crouch being his last in a red shirt.

Peter is currently the oldest referee in the Premiership and he started his refereeing career in the local Northampton leagues over 23 years ago, and in only 7 years he was running the line as a Football League Assistant. A season later he was promoted to a Premiership Assistant Referee and then a FIFA assistant two years later in 1996. In the same year he was on the line in the FA Cup Final as Manchester United beat us 1-0, and followed that up by being an assistant in the European Championship Finals.

He was promoted to a Football League referee in 1998 and spent five seasons there before getting the call to the Premiership. His first Premiership game was one of the its better games, as Wolverhampton Wanderers turned over a 3-0 half time deficit at Molineux to win 4-3 against Leicester City.

This will be his fifteenth time in the middle of a Liverpool match in all competitions, with only Portsmouth back in April 2007 having managed a victory.

His assistants are Trevor Massey and Stuart Burt with Kevin Friend as the fourth official.
